Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle was besieged by King John but fell in only 2 days. Since then much has happened like Queen Mary being proclaimed queen there and Sir Robert Hitcham purchasing it for £14000 - over £20 million pounds in todays money so he could use it as a poorhouse. Below are some reinacments of what it might have been like and pictures of the castle.

Did you know that there have actually been two different castles in Framlingham and it is rumoured there was even a third! The more likely theory is that in roughly 1148 Roger Bigod constructed either a motte and bailey castle or a ringwork castle yet he did not know that it would be destroyed in a few decades time by King Henry II. The hard to believe theory is that in the late 11th century there was a different castle built only to be destroyed by Hugh Bigod in the 1160s so he could build a bigger and more powerful castle than before. Sadly that was destroyed as well to clear space for King Henry II's new castle.

The day is September 27th 1943. A halifax bomber is coming back from an unsuccessful mission when suddenly the engines go. The crew try to land at the nearby Framlingham airfield but soon it loses all control. In a mass of smoke it comes hurtling down with great speed onto a a field at Parham House Farm. Only 3 of the 7 crew survive but only 1 wasn't injured.
